Tweens - To Makeup or Not Makeup?
By: Catwalk Girls
Mom, can I wear makeup now? Your tween (8 to 12 year old)
daughter finally popped the one question that is still ringing
in your ears and keeping you up late at night. She’s not a
grade-schooler and not a teen, so how do you respond? Here are
some simple guidelines on managing this foray into
adulthood.
The best way to answer this question is to
find out what has sparked her interest in makeup. Does she
want to imitate her friends? Is she hoping to look more grown
up? Or is it just for fun? To get a better sense of where this
newfound curiosity is coming from, spend time looking at
fashion magazines together and discuss her likes and dislikes.
Then experiment, pull out all your cosmetics and apply the
products on each other. Always be sure to emphasize that
makeup is all about enhancing features.
When & Where
As a mom, it is
your role to set guidelines. Avoid "no makeup" ultimatums.
This will surely result in makeup being worn behind your back
in the most inappropriate places. Test the waters by allowing
her to wear makeup for special occasions only, such as
birthday parties, holidays and family get togethers. When you
decide to allow her to wear it to school, ensure that her
school's policy allows makeup to be worn. If she participates
in dance recitals, gymnastics, cheerleading or skating
competitions, follow the guidelines provided by the
choreographer or coach. Halloween should be the one day where
there are no rules and anything goes.
What to Wear
Makeup must be age
appropriate, so play it safe with sheer lip gloss and
pastel-coloured eye shadows. Tweens love pink, purple and blue
hues and cosmetics that shimmer, sparkle or glitter. Girls
this age are naturally blessed with rosy cheeks, so blush may
not be necessary. Just remember that mascara and lipstick add
several years to a face, so be cautious if you approve. It's
best to avoid eyeliner as it is difficult to apply and creates
a very theatrical look. Not ready to allow her to take the
makeup plunge? Let her colour her finger and toe nails with
polishes in soft tones.
